About “From Back to Bach”

The Baiers have striven to make this show truly interdisciplinary.  Live musical interludes by talented, young, local performers…  add another dimension to the production.  The result…  a blending of past and present, a metaphor of the creative spirit..

About “Knock, Knock, Who is There?  Shakespeare in Motion.”

The results, choreographed by the Baiers, range from sarcastically comical to romantic to tragically somber.  That’s the key to the success of a group effort such as this – finding just the right balance, letting each element shine, but also allowing each element to take on the characteristics of the others around it.

About "Summer Verse"

“What do you do when words are no longer enough?  You dance”  That poem was written for Dafmark Dance Theater, the boundary-stretching company whose work is as satisfying for the mind as it is for the eye…  Summer Verse is an evening of dance, music, and poetry in celebration of summer solstice…  Baier, Brocki and the poets …  answer the question that is the inverse of the one that opened this article – namely, What do you do when dance is no longer enough?  The answer, poetry.

About "Revolving Doors"

The innovative dance company (Dafmark Dance Theater) literally opened a new stage of its evolution: from performer to presenter… (in) “Stone Garden” Jean-Marc Baier set out to answer the question, how do we cope with the deepest of pains, a loss we all share in common…  The speed of life was also a concern of  “Out of Body” one of the two pieces danced by LABCO… The other piece, “Steel Eyed Susans” by New York choreographer Donna Uchizono uses beautiful images and inventive costumes incorporating both metal and flower petals to convey a feminist message…

 About "Partners in Dance IV"

This is the fourth year that Shelly Walker, general manager of Dafmark and coordinator of the Partners in Dance program has brought together physically and developmentally challenged children and adults, the EHCA support staff and the Dafmark company…  The contemplative tone is contrasted with the zooming, car-like traffic jam of wheelchairs….   The let’s-stop-and-smell-the-roses message may be hard to discern when chaos looks this fun.

About "Fallen Trees"

"Fallen Trees" expands on the themes of tragedy and loss, optimism and hope…  "Fallen Trees" is about what happens when we neglect to take the time to stop, listen, observe, and learn…  Dafmark does its job well – raising the question, inching the door open to the answers, and providing a thoroughly entertaining evening of music and dance along the way.

About "Unsilenced Voices"...

"This production is stunning! It is tender, poignant, chilling and highly provocative. The performers meld dance, music and ideology in a unique expression which touches the heart and causes each of us to react, respond and hopefully act to enrich our human lot. It is quite simply, wonderful!"
Zanita A. Zacks-Gabriel, Esq., Violinist/Violist, March 21, 2004

"No mere agitprop, "Unsilenced Voices" is thought-provoking, gripping, ambiguous and sometimes difficult to watch. As such, it's as honest a depiction of the monstrosity of war as you are likely to see."
John Chacona, Erie Times News Contributing Writer, March 20, 2004

"Spilling out of the images of broken legs, gas masks, and displaced humans is the spirit that haunts the depth of the audience's being. In "Unsilenced Voices," the sound of the Ravel Trio and the poetical voice of actor Nicholas Hughes, mutually play the game of "the cat's cradle" with an invisible looped string with the dancers, as if each had the momentary role to create the right tension. In this way, the silenced voices of the sufferer were able to echo in our world to be heard again."
Keiko Miller, Assistant Professor of Japanese & French, Mercyhurst College, March 25, 2004

"...an exploration of adversity, loss and ultimately, hope. "Unsilenced Voices" is a powerful, provocative program... tragedy and loss... and an interwoven sense of optimism. A thought-provoking evening that will touch people on many different levels."
Karen Rene Merkle, Erie Daily Times, March 11, 2004

"[in "Unsilenced Voices"] the pieces of classical music that are performed are truly magnificent and all the performers are first-rate musicians. The dancing and choreography are extraordinary and deserve a wide audience. The recited poetry is both starkly simple and profound."
Presenter, Janet M. Powers, Associate Professor Interdisciplinary Studies, Gettysburg College, April 6, 2003

About "The Four Seasons II"...

"Lighthearted... childlike and carefree... acrobatic choreography that was delightfully fun. ...Walker danced one of the program's most heartfelt solos, her body sauntered and wriggled with somber intensity."
Steve Sucato, Dancer Magazine, August 2003

"Life and death, hope and tragedy, the individuality and universality of change - it's a lot to squeeze into one hour, but the Baiers are doing it... an ideal production..."
Karen Rene Merkle, Erie Daily Times, April 4, 2002
